3160 Marine EnginesA new supplier is used for the crankshafts in some of the above remanufactured engines and short blocks. These new crankshafts have been Tufftride hardened. Crankshafts originally hardened by Tufftriding must be hardened, again, either by Nitriding or by Tufftriding after they are reground (reconditioned).
The list at the end of the article gives a list of companies that can either Nitride or Tufftride harden a crankshaft.
The part number of the crankshaft assemblies that use the new crankshafts did not change. The crankshafts that have been Tufftride hardened will have a 9L8123, 9L8122, 9L8400, 1W7418, 1W7419 or 1W7420 part number on the counterweight (flywheel end).
If one of the above companies or some other company is used to recondition these crankshafts, make sure the company is given the part numbers of the crankshafts that must be hardened by Nitriding or Tufftriding.
