Removal Procedure
At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure.Steam can cause personal injury.Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with the bare hand.Remove the filler cap slowly to relieve pressure.Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with skin and eyes to prevent personal injury.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Drain the coolant. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant (ELC) - Change" for the correct draining and filling procedures.

Open hood (1).

Loosen the clamps and disconnect hose (2).
Loosen the clamp and disconnect hose (3).
Loosen the clamps and remove hose (5).
Loosen the clamp and disconnect hose (4). Disconnect harness assembly (6).

Remove bolts (8), water temperature regulator (7), and the O-ring seals.

Remove bolts (9), cover (10), and thermostat (12).
Remove adapter (11).

Remove sensor (13).
Remove plug (15) and the washer.
Remove plugs (14) and (16).Installation Procedure
Install water temperature regulator (7) in the reverse order of removal.
Tighten sensor (13) to a torque of 22 2 N.m (195 18 lb in).
Tighten adapter (11) to a torque of 27.5 2.5 N.m (243.4 22.1 lb in).
Tighten bolts (9) to a torque of 22.5 2.5 N.m (199.1 22.1 lb in).
Tighten bolts (8) to a torque of 47.5 1.5 N.m (35.0 1.1 lb ft).
