On machines prior to those that are listed in Table 1, the center support assembly must be trimmed in order to allow the installation of flat (B) on plate (2). Refer to Illustration 1. This flat prevents pin (1) from rotating when you tighten bolts (3). Trim only enough from the center support assembly to allow the installation of plate (2) .
Also, on machines prior to those listed in Table 1, the surface of cap assembly (11) that contacts plate (2), must be machined smooth. This will prevent plate (2) from breaking when bolts (3) are tightened. If caps are required, 8X-3375 Cap As is available for 789 Trucks, and 8X-0574 Cap As is available for 785 and 777B Trucks, and 776B Tractors.
Assemble the components as shown in the illustrations, but WITHOUT shim pack (5), and only three bolts (3) even spaced by 120 degrees. Tighten bolts (3) to a torque of 200 25 N m (150 18 lb ft). Bolts (9) and washers (10) must be installed, but not tight at this time.Note: The chamfer on the inside of thrust washer (7) must be away from bearing (8). The chamfer provides clearance for the radius on the thrust face of pin (1) .
Measure the distance between plate (2) and the end of pin (1). Record the distance.
Add 0.25 mm (0.010 inch) to the dimension that was found in Step 2. This is the thickness of shim pack (5) that is required to provide the correct end play.
Remove bolts (3) and plate (2). Install shim pack (5) of thickness that was determined in Step 3.
Install plate (2) with six bolts (3) and washers (4). Tighten the bolts to a torque of 750 90 N m (550 65 lb ft). Note: Step 8 is only for 789 Trucks. For 776B Tractors, 777B Trucks, and 785 Trucks, proceed to Step 9.
