Information:
Aggressive application of retarder capacity in slippery conditions may cause loss of operator control. Apply the retarder gradually in slippery conditions. Serious injury or death may occur from loss of operator control.
Do not use the retarder control as a parking brake or hold stationary on a grade.
The retarder system brakes the machine and allows the machine to maintain a constant downhill speed. The retarder can be used to reduce ground speed. The electrical retarding that is provided by the rear traction motors is more economical than the braking system because of the reduced wear to the brake discs.Retarding is applied to the rear wheels only. The retarder for the rear wheels uses the traction motors to provide electrical retarding. The traction motors transfer the mechanical energy into electrical energy. The electrical energy is then transferred into heat by the electric retarder on the right-hand platform. It is recommended that the accelerator be released and the dynamic retarding pedal be depressed before reaching the crest of the hill to be descended or when using to decrease speed.
Illustration 1 g03663180Automatic Retarder Control (ARC) (2)
Automatic Retarder Control (ARC) (2) - Pull up the switch button to select the ON position for the ARC system. The ARC system allows the machine to maintain a constant downhill speed. Push the switch button down to select the OFF position for the ARC system. When the proper machine speed is set on the ARC, vehicle speed and engine speed will be automatically regulated. If necessary, use the manual retarder control to apply more retarding force during the operation of ARC.The following conditions must be met before the ARC is active:
The shift control lever is in neutral or forward.
The machine speed is below the speed that is set on the ARC.
The throttle lock is OFF.
The accelerator pedal is released. When the machine is allowed to coast in NEUTRAL, the ARC will use the speed setting for the ARC, or the lowest active speed limiter to activate the ARC.Retarding Adjustment (Speed) for the ARC (1)
Retarding Adjustment (Speed) for the ARC (1) - Depress the top of the switch or the bottom of the switch for 3 seconds to maintain a desired speed. Release the switch after the desired speed has been set. Momentarily press the top half of the switch to increase machine speed by one increment. Momentarily press the bottom half of the switch to decrease machine speed by one increment.Retarding Information and Conditions
The ground speed must be slow enough for the conditions and at a rate that will not cause the retarding system to be outside the retarding envelope. Retarding should be steady. Slow down the machine for better retarding control. Do not travel at high ground speeds and do not stop in a short distance. If additional braking is still needed, depress the service brake to slow the truck to a speed that can be maintained by retarding only. Do not speed up and brake. Do not try to do all the braking at the bottom of the hill. Keep
