Start By:a. remove engineb. remove air starterc. remove oil pan (rear half only)d. remove tachometer drivee. remove crankshaft rear seal and wear sleeve1. Remove the bolts and the cover from the flywheel housing. Early engines use two bolts to hold the plate to the camshaft. Later engines use only one bolt to hold the plate to the camshaft.2. Remove the bolts and the plate from camshaft drive gear (1) on the right side camshaft. Use tooling (A) to remove camshaft drive gear (1), and the camshaft drive gear on the left side camshaft.3. Put stands or blocks under the rear of the engine as support. The weight of the engine is approximately 6131 kg (13,515 lb.).
Typical Example4. Fasten a hoist to flywheel housing (2), and remove the bolts that hold it. Remove flywheel housing (2) from the end of the cylinder block. The weight of flywheel housing (2) is 202 kg (445 lb.).Install Flywheel Housing
1. Use 6V1541 Quick Cure Primer to clean the mating surfaces of the flywheel housing and the cylinder block. Put 6V6640 Gasket Maker on the surfaces of the flywheel housing that makes contact with the cylinder block.
Typical Example2. Install two 5/8"-11 NC guide bolts in the rear of the cylinder block. Fasten a hoist, and put flywheel housing (1) in position on the guide bolts. 3. Install the bolts in their respective locations. See the Installation Chart. Tighten the 1/2"-NC bolts to a torque of 135 15 N m (100 11 lb.ft.). The 5/8"-11 NC bolts are tightened to a torque of 270 25 N m (200 18 lb.ft.). Cut the flywheel housing gasket even with the bottom of the cylinder block. For correct timing, all gear clearance (backlash) must be removed. Turn camshaft drive gears (2) in the same direction as the crankshaft rotation and hold in this position.4. Put camshaft drive gears (2), plate (3) and the tachometer drive adapter assembly in position on the ends of the camshafts. Install the bolts that hold them. Early engines use two bolts to hold plate (3) and the tachometer drive adapter assembly to the camshafts. Later engines use only one bolt to hold the plate and adapter assembly to the camshafts.5. Tighten the bolt for the single bolt adapter and plate as follows:a. Tighten the bolt to a torque of 360 40 N m (270 30 lb.ft.).b. Hit the adapter and plate with a hammer to seat the gear on the camshaft.c. Tighten the bolt again to a torque of 360 40 N m (270 30 lb.ft.).d. Repeat steps 5b and 5c until the torque does not change.6. Tighten the bolts for the two bolt adapter and plate assembly as follows:a. Tighten the bolts evenly to a torque of 100 15 N m
Typical Example4. Fasten a hoist to flywheel housing (2), and remove the bolts that hold it. Remove flywheel housing (2) from the end of the cylinder block. The weight of flywheel housing (2) is 202 kg (445 lb.).Install Flywheel Housing
