EMS Control. Location of position 5.
Approximate location of pressure sensing switches, screens or filters.The Electronic Monitoring System (EMS) Transmission Oil Filter alert indicator (position 5) provides a signal for the operator that the filters or screens monitored are becoming restricted or plugged. This indication is a Warning Category 2 for these trucks.
When this alert indicator comes on during operation, the operator is to move the truck to a convenient place to park the truck and stop the engine. The filters are to be changed and checked for metal (failure debris) pieces according to the Operation & Maintenance Manual.
This alert indicator can also signal a malfunction of the harness connecting the switches to the EMS Control in the cab. Effective with the above product identification numbers, five switches are connected in series to provide the filter signal.
If any of the five switches opens, the filter alert indicator the EMS Control will flash (position 5). A temperature switch (2) prevents nuisance warnings by "shorting out" all the switches until the transmission oil temperature reaches approximately 52°C (125°F). Once the temperature switch opens, the EMS will monitor all the switches connected in series.
Normal Operation
Transmission Supply Filter (2)
This filter is the main supply filter for the transmission system. The filter switch is held closed by the bypass spool and a spring inside the filter housing base. This spool reacts to the change in pressure across the filter element.
Once the bypass spool starts to move towards the bypass position, the switch contacts will open and signal the operator with the Transmission Oil Filter alert indicator (position 5) on the EMS Control in the cab.
Torque Converter Inlet Filter (1 or 3)
This filter prevents any debris generated by the torque converter pump or debris existing in the system from entering the torque converter. If excessive debris, begins to plug the filter, the inlet filter switch (1 or 3) will react to the increase in pressure accoss the filter.
When this increase in pressure across the filter reaches the switch set point, the contacts open and signal the operator with the Transmission Oil Filter alert indicator (position 5) on the EMS Control in the cab.
Torque Converter Outlet Screen (5)
This screen is in the lines which exit the torque converter and provide flow through the diverter valve to the front brake oil cooler located on the cross tube. Should any debris be present in the system or if any is generated by the torque converter, the screen will prevent it from entering the front brake cooler or front brakes.
The outlet screen switch is held closed by a piston and spring inside the screen base. Should excessive debris plug the screen, the piston will move due to an increase in differential pressure across the screen and open the switch contacts and signal the operator with the Transmission Oil Filter alert indicator (position 5) on the EMS Control in the cab.
