Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Make sure that the steering wheel is in the NEUTRAL position and that the parking brake is engaged. Install Tool (A) to valve (5) and to valve (6) .
Do not turn the steering wheel when the engine is running and a low pressure gauge has been installed in the steering circuit. If the steering wheel is turned, the pressure of the oil to the steering cylinders will be too high for a low pressure gauge.
Start the engine and operate the engine at high idle.
The pressure differential meter should read 750 135 kPa (110 19 psi) on each valve. The difference between the two readings may not exceed 95 kPa (14 psi).
Shut off the engine and disconnect the hoses.
Reinstall the hoses to opposite valves and repeat Step 2 through Step 4.
Average the two sets of readings in order to determine your differential pressure.
If the pressure is not correct, shut off the engine and engage the parking brake. The pressure can be adjusted by changing the number of shims in the steering control valve.
Install shims (1) and (2) in order to increase the pressure at valve (5) and decrease the pressure at valve (6) .
Remove shims (1) and (2) in order to decrease the pressure at valve (6) and decrease the pressure at valve (5) .
Repeat Step 2 through Step 7.b until the pressure is correct.
Remove Tool (A) from valve (5) and valve (6) .
