Under-the-Hood Inspection
Make a thorough under-the-hood inspection before starting the engine. Look for items such as fuel, oil, or coolant leaks, worn belts, and trash buildup. Remove trash buildup and have repairs made as needed. Perform required Daily maintenance before starting the engine.Starting the Engine Below 20°C (68°F)
This engine has an inlet manifold heater for cold weather starting. Do not use other types of starting aids such as ether. Such use could result in an explosion and personal injury.
DO NOT USE ETHER (starting fluids) unless specifically instructed to do so. If the engine is equipped with an Air Inlet Heater (electrically or fuel ignited manifold heater), DO NOT use starting fluids (ether) at any time. The use could result in engine damage and/or personal injury.
Startability will be improved at temperatures below 0°C (32°F) by the use of a jacket water heater or other means to heat the crankcase oil. This will help alleviate white smoke and misfire during cold weather start-up.
When using starting fluid, follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully, use it sparingly and spray it ONLY WHILE CRANKING THE ENGINE. Excessive ether can cause piston and ring damage. Use ether for cold weather starting purposes only.
For engines that are NOT EQUIPPED with an Air Inlet Heater (electrically or fuel ignited manifold heater), use ether when temperatures are below 0°C (32°F) for cold weather starting purposes only. If the vehicle/engine is equipped with a starting fluid (ether) injection system, begin cranking the engine and depress the ether switch and hold for three seconds before release. Additional injections may be necessary to start and/or achieve low idle speed. There will be an indicator lamp on the dashboard of the vehicle marked AIR INLET HEATER if the engine is equipped with an Air Inlet Heater. Start the engine using the following procedure.1. Engage the Parking Brake. Place the transmission in NEUTRAL and disengage the flywheel clutch. This reduces transmission drag and prevent movement of the truck.Depressing the clutch in cold weather can mean the difference between starting and not starting by reducing battery drain.2. Turn the ignition switch (key) to the ON position. If the AIR INLET HEATER indicator lamp activates ON, wait until the indicator lamp turns OFF (approximately 60 seconds) before attempting to start the engine. Attempting to start the engine before the AIR INLET HEATER indicator lamp turns OFF disables the Air Inlet Heater and could result in excessive white smoke at start-up.3. Push the
