Probable Cause
Restricted flow of air through the radiator or restricted flow of coolant through the radiatorRemove all of the flow restrictions.
Low coolant levelAdd coolant to the cooling system. Check for leaks.
Faulty pressure capCheck operation of the pressure cap. Install a new pressure cap, as required.
Combustion gases in coolantFind the source of the leakage of combustion gases into the cooling system. Make repairs, as required:
Cylinder liner
Water cooled valve seat insert
Faulty water temperature regulatorsCheck water temperature regulators for correct operation. Check the water temperature gauge for correct operation. Install new parts, as required.
Faulty water pumpMake repairs to the water pump, as required.
Too much load on the systemReduce the load on the system.
Wrong fuel injection timingMake adjustment to timing. Refer to Testing And Adjusting, "Fuel System".Engine Temperature Is Too Cool

Coolant leaks in hoses or coolant leaks in hose connections.Check all hoses and connections for signs of leakage. Repair the damaged parts or replace the damaged parts.

Cylinder head gasket leakageLook for leaks along the surface of the head gasket. If leaks are present replace the head gasket.
