Information:
When an electrical system problem is present, the alert indicator for the electrical system FLASHES. For a description of the warning indications for an electrical system problem, see Systems Operation > Warning Operation. The most common causes are low alternator speed or missing alternator "R" terminal signal.Test Step 1. VISUAL CHECKCheck the alternator belt pulley and the belt tension.Expected Result:Pulley nut torque and belt tension are proper. Results:
OK. - Go to Step 2.
NOT OK. - Repair: Fix or adjust the belt.STOPTest Step 2. CHECK ELECTRICAL SYSTEM VOLTAGEMeasure the voltage at the battery posts with the engine at high idle.Expected Result:Voltage is between 26.5 DCV and 29.0 DCV.Results:
OK. - Go to Step 3.
NOT OK - There is a fault in the electrical system.Repair: Check the charging system. Go to Charging System Test.STOPTest Step 3. CHECK ALTERNATOR "R" TERMINAL OUTPUT
Disconnect the machine harness connector from the alternator "R" terminal.
Start the engine and run at high idle.
Measure the voltage between the alternator "R" terminal and frame ground.Expected Result:Voltage is between 12.0 DCV and 15.0 DCV.Results:
OK - Repair: Connect machine harness connector to alternator "R" terminal.Go to Step 4.
NOT OK - The alternator is faulty.Repair: Replace the alternator.STOPTest Step 4. CHECK "R" TERMINAL HARNESS CIRCUIT
Turn the key start switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the machine harness from the EMS control.
Start the engine and run at high idle.
At the machine harness connector for the EMS control, measure the voltage between contact 3 ("R" terminal circuit) and contact 2 (ground).Note: DO NOT ALLOW THESE TWO CIRCUITS TO TOUCH.Expected Result:Voltage is between 12.0 DCV and 15.0 DCV.Results:
OK - Repair: Replace the EMS control. See EMS Control Replacement.STOP
