Illustration 1. Winch control valve.2. If the housing assembly still has brake fluid in it, drain the brake fluid from the housing assembly and check it for water and dirt.3. Fill the housing assembly with brake fluid to the correct level and install the washer and cap.4. Remove cap (3) and the tube assembly and fitting (4). See Illustration 2. Check bearing (5) on fitting (4) for water and rust. Check the bearing bore in cap (6) for rust. Remove cap (6).5. Remove packing (7) from cap (6) and install new packing.6. Remove cover (8).
Do not let the fluid in hose assembly (11) make contact with the internal components of the winch when it is removed.
7. Remove hose assembly (11) and connector (12). See Illustration 3. Use forcing screws to remove hub (13) and the primary and secondary clutch bands from the winch as a unit.8. Inspect the internal surface of the drum that makes contact with the clutch bands. If necessary, use emery cloth and a solution that will remove grease to make sure this surface of the drum is clean.9. Remove clutch cylinder assembly (9). Disassemble the cylinder assembly and check for damage. See the Parts Book for the repair kit that can be used to make any necessary repairs.

Illustration 3. End view of winch.10. Install the hub and clutch bands as a unit in the winch. Make sure there is 0.25 mm (.010") of clearance between the clutch bands and the drum.11. Remove brake cylinder assembly (10). Disassemble the cylinder assembly and check for damage. See the Parts Book for the repair kit that can be used to make any necessary repairs.12. Remove brake bands (15). See Illustration 2. Inspect the surface of the drum that makes contact with the brake bands. If necessary, use emery cloth and a solution that will remove grease to clean this surface.13. Check the condition of the brake bands and make a replacement if necessary.14. Remove spring (14). See Illustration 3. Make a replacement of this spring if its length is less than 175.5 mm (6.91").15. Remove the plug on the bottom of housing (16) to drain the oil from the end of the winch with the gears. See Illustration 2. Check the oil for debris and water. If there is debris or water in the oil, remove cover (19) and the input gear adapter assembly from the winch.16. Disassemble the adapter assembly and inspect the components for damage. See the Disassembly and Assembly section of the Service Manual.17. Remove pinion (17). See the Disassembly and Assembly section of the Service Manual. Inspect the teeth on pinion (17) and on gear (18).18. Make sure the housing around cover (19) is clean.19. Assemble the winch and fill the gear compartment to the correct level with clean SAE 90 oil.20. Make sure this area below the winch is clean so that water on the frame can be drained.21. Bleed the air from the winch lines at
