Measure The Cylinder Rod Extension
1. Check and make sure that bogie suspension springs are correctly inflated.2. Clean the undercarriage. Move the machine forward and allow it to stop without using the service brake pedal.3. Stop the engine. Move the transmission control lever to NEUTRAL and engage the parking brake.4. Check the nitrogen charge pressure and adjust if needed. See Test and Charge the Tension Cylinder to get the correct nitrogen charge in relationship to temperature.5. Measure the length of the tensioner cylinder from the centerline of one retainer pin hole to the centerline of the other retainer pin hole to get Dimension (A). Dimension (A) should be 1238.0 11.0 mm (48.74 .43 in). Check dimension (A) on both cylinders.5. If dimension (A) is not correct, record them for later use. On earlier models perform the procedure to Adjust Belt Tension. There is no adjustment on later models. When dimension (A) (tension cylinder retainer pin to retainer pin dimension) is 1238.0 11.0 mm (48.74 .43 in), dimension (B) (cylinder rod extension) should be 149 mm (5.86 in).The use of dimension (A) gives a more accurate adjustment and should be used when measuring the cylinder rod extension. If dimension (A) is not possible to measure use dimension (B) on earlier models and dimension (D) on later models.6. On earlier models dimension (C) is 33 mm (1.30 in).7. On later models dimension (C) is 45 mm (1.77 in).8. Dimension (D) is 277 mm (10.9 in). Dimension A and D cannot be adjusted on later models with the machined pad on bracket (3).Adjust Belt Tension (Earlier models)
The following procedure uses the machine hydraulics to relieve the belt tensioning. An auxiliary pump, such as the Caterpillar service press, can be used. If an auxiliary pump is used, the procedure of extending both cylinders at the same time should still be followed.1. Remove the 4T-4273 Relief Valve Group (slowly, to relieve any pressure within the cylinder) from both cylinders.2. Install one 6L-9952 Adapter with one 3D-2824 Seal to each tensioner cylinder. Install FT2228 Hose Group:Connect the 2.4 m (8 ft) hose between the adapters at the tensioner cylinders. Connect the 8.8 m (29 ft) hose to the No. 1, RAISE implement quick disconnect coupler, at the rear of the machine.
DO NOT exceed a maximum pressure of 17 580 kPa (2550 psi) when pressurizing the belt tensioner cylinders or machine damage can result. When pressurizing the belt tensioner cylinders, extend the cylinders only far enough to install locks and bolts (5).
3. Start the engine. Using the implement control lever that corresponds to the implement line coupler connected in Step 2, slowly pressurize and extend both tensioner cylinders. Extend the tensioner cylinder only far enough to install locks and bolts (5). The 9U-4270 Lock and two 8T-9379 Bolts are available from parts service.4. Position locks and bolts (5) over the cylinder rods and secure.5. Use the implement control lever to slowly vent the hydraulic pressure from the belt tensioner cylinder.6. Position a
