Accidental machine starting can cause injury or death to personnel working on the machine.To avoid accidental machine starting, turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position and remove the key. If the machine is not equipped with a battery disconnect switch, disconnect the battery cables from the battery and tape the battery clamps.Place a do not operate tag at the battery disconnect switch location to inform personnel that the machine is being worked on.
The saw chain will expand as the speed of the chain increases. The chain will stretch during normal operation of the harvester head. The chain will increase in length.

(1) Tensioner housing. (2) Saw bar holder. (A) Maximum movement (saw bar holder).The saw bar holder moves during normal operation. The tension on the chain is adjusted automatically.Check the position of saw bar holder (2) regularly. When saw bar holder (2) is level position (A) with the two pins, the chain has stretched too far. Remove the chain. Install a new chain.
A chain that is stretched can cause improper tensioning on the chain. Damage to the saw bar holder, the tensioner housing, and to the saw unit can occur. Check the position of the saw bar holder regularly. Replace the chain, if necessary.

Place the harvester head in the horizontal position.Note: Under normal operating conditions, the saw chain may need to be replaced several times per eight hour shift.

Move the control valve (3) out of housing (1) and into the open position.

Apply 157-2184 Holder Release Tool (5). Pull holder release tool (5) toward the end of the saw bar. This will relieve the tension on the saw chain. Pull holder release tool (5) slowly until the saw bar stops.Note: The 157-2184 Holder Release Tool is shipped with the harvester head.
Move control valve (3) toward the saw motor into the locked position. This will lock the saw bar in the current position.In this position, the lock pin of the saw bar tensioner is in the IN position. This allows the saw bar holder to be removed.
Remove holder release tool (5) and remove the saw chain.
Install a new chain.

Install the holder release tool and pull the tool toward the tip of the saw bar.
While you are pulling on the handle of the holder release tool, move the control valve into the operating position.
Slowly remove pressure from the holder release tool and allow the saw
