Connections of the Cat data link circuitThis diagnostic code is associated with the communication between the Implement ECM 2 and the Messenger that is conducted over the Cat Data Link. The FMI 09 means that the Implement ECM 2 has lost communication with the Messenger. The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed below:
An open or a faulty connection in the Cat Data Link circuit
The Messenger has failed. This is unlikely.
The ECM has failed. This is unlikely.Note: If the Messenger is not operating correctly, refer to Testing and Adjusting, RENR9034 for information on troubleshooting the Messenger. Ensure that CID 0967 FMI 09 diagnostic code is active before performing this procedure. Check the Messenger for correct operation before performing this procedure.Note: The machine ECMs will wait two minutes after losing communication with the Messenger before activating this diagnostic code.Test Step 1. CHECK THE DATA LINK CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the machine harness connector J1 from the Implement ECM 2. Disconnect the machine harness connector from the Messenger.
Refer to the illustration above in order to check the Cat Data Link connection on each of the machine harness connectors. Perform the following:
Visually inspect the harness connectors.
Clean the contacts of the harness connectors.
Ensure that the wires are secured in the connector and in good condition.
At the harness connectors, measure the resistance from the contact of the ECM connector J1-10 (wire 893-GN) to the contact of the Messenger 6 (wire 893-GN).
At the disconnected harness connectors, measure the resistance from the contact of the ECM connector J1-20 (wire 892-BR) to the contact of the Messenger 5 (wire 892-BR).Expected Result:Both of the resistance measurements are less than 5 ohms.Results:
OK - Both of the resistance measurements are less than 5 ohms. The Cat Data Link circuit in the machine harness is not open. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - At least one of the resistance measurements is more than 5 ohms.Repair: There is an open or a bad connection in the Cat Data Link circuit in the machine harness. Refer to the Electrical Schematic of the machine. Examine all of the harness connections of the machine that are involved in the data link circuit. Check each wire section from one connector to another connector for an open or a bad connection. Inspect the connections for the following:
Connections are clean.
Connections are secure.
Connections are in good condition.Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.STOPTest Step 2. CHECK THE STATUS OF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODENote: There is a 2 minute interval time on this code.
Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires that are associated with the data link circuit.
Reconnect all harness connectors. Verify the following:
The connectors are fully seated.
The clips for each connector are fastened completely.
Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.
Operate the machine.
Check the status of the CID 0967 FMI 09 diagnostic code.Expected Result:The CID 0967 FMI 09 diagnostic code is
