Remove the axle.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Drain the oil from the axle. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Axle Oil (Rear) - Change".
Position suitable blocks under the axle in order to support the sections during removal.

Loosen nut (2). Use Tooling (A) in order to disconnect tie rod (1) from the steering knuckle. Remove nut (2) and reposition tie rod (1).

Illustration 4 g01636362Note: Put location marks on the axle housing, brake cylinder assemblies, and the center housing for assembly purposes.
Attach a suitable lifting device onto axle housing, axle shaft, and wheel flange (4). The weight of axle housing, axle shaft, and wheel flange (4) is approximately 204 kg (450 lb).
Remove bolts (3). Remove axle housing, axle shaft, and wheel flange (4) from brake cylinder assembly (5).
Repeat Step 3 through Step 5 for the other side.
