Illustration 1 g02150991The auxiliary start receptacle (1) is located on the lower right front of the machine behind access cover (2).Some Caterpillar products may be equipped with auxiliary start receptacles. All other machines can be equipped with a receptacle from parts service. Then, a permanent receptacle is always available for jump starting.There are two cable assemblies that can be used to jump-start the stalled machine with the auxiliary start receptacle. In order to jump-start from receptacle to receptacle (machine to machine) use 9S-3664 cable. In order to jump-start from terminal to receptacle (power pack to machine) use 8S-2632 cable. Contact your Caterpillar dealer for more information on the proper cable for your application.
Determine the cause for the failure of the machine to start. Refer to Special Instruction, REHS0354, "Charging System Troubleshooting" for further information.
Place the transmission control lever in the P position on the stalled machine. This will engage the parking brake. Move all controls to the HOLD position.
On the stalled machine, turn the start switch key to the OFF position. Turn off all of the accessories.
Turn primary battery disconnect switch (3) to the ON (enabled) position. Note: This machine is equipped with a secondary battery disconnect switch. When an electrical power source is connected to the auxiliary start receptacle and the secondary battery disconnect switch is in the OFF (disabled) position, the battery and the battery cables that are located under the body will be bypassed. This will allow jump starting capabilities from the auxiliary start receptacle when primary battery disconnect switch is in the ON (enabled) position. Starting the engine with the use of the secondary battery disconnect switch will allow the body to be raised in order to gain access and repair a malfunction of the machine batteries and/or the battery cables that are located under the body. The machine is only intended for temporary operation when the machine batteries are bypassed. For more information on the primary and secondary battery disconnect switches, refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Battery Disconnect Switch".
Move the machine that is used for the electrical source close to the stalled machine. The cables must reach. DO NOT ALLOW THE MACHINES TO CONTACT EACH OTHER.
Stop the engine on the machine that is used for the electrical source. When you use an auxiliary power source, turn the charging system to the OFF position.
On the stalled machine, connect the appropriate jump-start cable to the auxiliary start receptacle.
Connect the other end of this cable to the auxiliary start receptacle on the electrical source.
Start the engine on the machine that is used for the electrical source or energize the charging system on the auxiliary power pack.
Allow the electrical source to charge the batteries for 2 minutes.
Attempt to start the stalled engine. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Starting".
Immediately after the stalled engine starts, disconnect the jump-start cable from the electrical source.
Disconnect the other end of this cable from the stalled machine.
Conclude with a failure analysis on the starting charging system. Check the stalled
