Install pinion (8) in housing (5) complete with bearings.2. Install washer (6) and nut (7).3. While pinion (8) is slowly turned, tighten nut (7) to obtain a rolling torque of 1.2 to 3.4 N m (11 to 30 lb in). If the torque exceeds the specification, back off one-eight of a turn and retorque. Check assembly for zero end play. Reduce preload torque 0.6 N m (5.31 lb in) for machines with over 100 hours of operation.4. Stake nut (7) by peening the collar into the slot in the pinion shaft. See illustration A for the correct tooling and dimensions. The nut may be reused if the collar is not cracked during removal or restaking.

Install pinion subassembly in carrier assembly (13) with 80 percent of shim pack (3) and bevel gear group in carrier assembly with the axle centerline in the vertical position and the teeth of ring gear (10) toward the top.6. Torque one of two bolts in each bearing cap to 70 N m (50 lb ft), the other two at 5 N m (4 lb ft).7. Move adjusting nuts (1) and (12) to a position that maintains gear backlash, but not tight gear mesh and a slight bearing end play.8. Measure the torque required to rotate pinion (8) and record the measured torque.9. Move adjusting nut (1), while rotating bevel gear (10) to zero backlash position. Move adjusting nut (1) back to the nearest lock position (maximum back off movement, one lug on adjusting nut).10. Move adjusting nut (12) until the torque to rotate pinion (8) is increased 20 percent more than pinion torque in Step 8. This is the seated position.11. Tighten adjusting nut (12) three lugs plus the amount to the nearest lock position.12. Measure the backlash between ring gear (10) and pinion (8). The backlash must be 0.40 0.12 mm (.016 .005 in).13. If the backlash does not meet specification, retract one nut the same amount the opposite nut is advanced to keep the bearing preload.14. Torque bearing cap bolts (14) to 1800 200 N m (1325 150 lb ft).15. Measure overall rolling torque at pinion (8). It should read 3.2 to 11.4 N m (28 to 100 lb in). The differential preload will be kept only if one adjustment ring is loosened
