Use this procedure in order to troubleshoot abnormal fuel rail pressure.Note: If a 5357-31 diagnostic code is active, check the power supply to the ECM before continuing with this procedure. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Power Supply - Test".Probable Causes

Diagnostic Trouble Codes
Use one of the following methods to check for active diagnostic trouble codes:
The electronic service tool
The display on the control panelElectronic Service Tool
Connect the electronic service tool to the diagnostic connector.
Check for active diagnostic trouble codes on the electronic service tool.

Check for correct installation of the P1 and P2 connectors on the ECM. Check for correct installation of all other electrical connectors in the fuel system. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect".
If necessary, perform any repairs to the connectors or the wiring.
Check if the fault has been eliminated. If the fault is still present, refer to "Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor".Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor
With the engine shutdown, use the electronic service tool to check the status of the "Fuel Rail Pressure". After the engine has been shut down for 10 minutes, the "Fuel Rail Pressure (absolute)" must be less than 5000 kPa (725 psi) (gauge).
If the "Fuel Rail Pressure" on the electronic service tool is less than 5000 kPa (725 psi), proceed to "Fuel System".
If the "Fuel Rail Pressure" on the electronic service tool does not fall to less than 5000 kPa (725 psi) (gauge), the fuel rail pressure sensor may be faulty. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Engine Pressure Sensor Open or Short Circuit - Test".
Check if the fault has been eliminated. If the fault is still present, refer to "Fuel System".Fuel System
High Fuel Rail Pressure
Perform the diagnostic test procedure on the inlet metering valve in the high-pressure fuel pump. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Solenoid Valve - Test".Low Fuel Rail Pressure
Make sure that the level of fuel in the fuel tank is sufficient. If necessary, fill the fuel tank.
Contact with high pressure fuel may cause fluid penetration and burn hazards. High pressure fuel spray may cause a fire hazard. Failure to follow these inspection, maintenance and service instructions may cause personal injury or death.
Use the electronic service tool to perform the "High Rail Pressure Test". This service test will run the engine with an elevated fuel rail pressure for a limited time. Once the service test has completed, inspect the high-pressure fuel system for leaks. Rectify any fuel leaks.
Perform the diagnostic test procedure for the inlet metering valve in the high-pressure fuel pump. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Solenoid Valve - Test".
Replace the primary fuel filter and the secondary fuel filter. Refer to the applicable procedure in the Operation and Maintenance Manual.
Check for the introduction of air in the low-pressure fuel system. Refer to Systems Operation, Testing and
