Personal injury or death may result from failure to adhere to the following procedures.Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire.Clean up all leaked or spilled fuel. Do not smoke while working on the fuel system.Turn the disconnect switch OFF or disconnect the battery when changing fuel filters.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Do not fill the fuel filters with fuel before installing the fuel filters. The fuel will not be filtered and could be contaminated. Contaminated fuel will cause accelerated wear to fuel system parts.

Place a suitable container under the drain valves. Open a drain valve. Drain the fuel into a suitable container. When the fuel stops draining, keep the drain valve open. As the filter is loosened, additional fuel may drain from the drain valve. When the fuel stops draining, loosen the filter and remove the filter from mounting base and retain. Close the drain valves. Properly dispose of the fuel.
Remove the element from the filter body. Properly dispose of the element.
Inspect the fuel filter element for debris by separating the pleats. Discard the used fuel filter element properly.
Clean the mounting base and filter bowl.
Install a new element into the filter bowl. Turn the drain valve by hand until the filter element is snug.
Apply a thin coat of clean diesel fuel to the sealing surface of the new fuel filter element. Install a new fuel filter hand tight until the seal of the fuel filter contacts the base.
Tighten the filter according to the instructions that are printed on the filter box. Use the index marks as a guide. For non-Cat filters, use the instructions that are provided with the filter. Use a Cat strap wrench, or another suitable tool, in order to turn the filter to the amount that is required for final installation. Make sure that the installation tool does not damage the filter.
Prime the fuel system. Turn the key start switch to the ON position. The fuel system will prime automatically with the electric fuel pump. Reference: For more information, refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System - Prime".
Close the engine access door.
