92. Install dowel pin, shim pack, and bearing cup in end cover-as shown.
Figure 3793. Important: The valve plate is directional (CCW or CW). Metering slots (located at end of kidney-shaped holes) are the only visual difference between CCW or CW valve plate-as shown.Install valve plate on end cover, see Fig. 36. Make sure valve plate and dowel pin engage. Applying clean petroleum jelly, or oil, to valve plate (side toward end cover) helps hold plate to end cover. Also generously lubricate bearing plate surface (bronze) and 9 piston bores.

Slowly and evenly tighten bolts until you eliminate spring load gap between end cover and pump housing. Torque bolts 44-53 ft. lb. for Models "46 and 54". For models "33 and 39" torque bolts 28-34 ft.lb. And for Model "76" torque bolts 68-82 ft. lb.
Figure 3996 Remove pump from blocks, then use a rubber mallet to tap shaft end-this seats bearings. Then place a magnetic base indicator on mounting flange, and an indicator guage on shaft end-as shown in Fig. 39. Grip shaft with pliers, then pry shaft out for total end play. If indicators don't read .002/.007, you must remove or add shim(s) behind end cover bearing cup.
