The connecting rod and cap have a fractured joint. The fractured joint makes consistent measurements of the bore in the connecting rod for the main bearing difficult to obtain.Some measured connecting rods do not meet the published dimensions for reusability, although the rods can be used.Solution

Until alternative dimensions for reuse are determined, use the following guidelines:Do not reuse a connecting rod if a crankshaft bearing failed in the rod.For a connecting rod that did not have a crankshaft bearing failure, inspect the rod according to Reuse and Salvage Guidelines, SEBF8063, "Visual Inspection of Connecting Rods". However, disregard the specification for reuse of the connecting rod bore for the crankshaft, dimension (A) in Illustration 1.Prior to installation of a new bearing, clean the surfaces of the bearing interface in the connecting rod and cap. Only use brake cleaner and a lint-free wipe. Protect the oil passage in the crankshaft from entry of contaminants and cleaning fluid. Make sure that there is no dirt or debris on the surfaces of the fracture faces on the rod and cap.
