Removing And Fitting Starter
1. Disconnect electrical leads and undo mounting bolts, Fig. 6-1 and remove starter from the mounting flange.

Removal:
1. Remove engine auxiliaries or the connecting housing from the engine casing.2. Remove the clutch or other components mounted to the flywheel.3. Lock the flywheel suitably and undo the mounting bolts.Fig. 6-2

4. Fit the flywheel over the end of the crankshaft, screw in the bolts and tighten as specified.Fig. 6-3
6-35. Fit the clutch and / or all engine auxiliaries.Checking Starter, Replacing Carbon Brushes
The starter has been removed.1. Check starter gear for wear and replace if necessary.Fig. 6-4
6-42. Remove protective covers.3. Lift out the compression springs and withdraw the carbon brushes.4. Remove the carbon brush carrier plate and inspect the commutator.Fig. 6-5
6-5 Note for Refitment:Replace worn carbon brushes.The surface must be free of scores and burn marks. Clean the surface of the commutator. If the commutator has been run in, the starter must be reconditioned.5. Slide the carbon brush carrier plate straight over the shaft and insert the carbon brushes.Fig. 6-6
6-66. Replace the protective covers, making sure that the distance washer(s), the retaining ring and the seal are fitted.Fig. 6-7
6-7Replacing The Flywheel Ring Gear (in the case of engines with a starter)
The flywheel has been removed.1. Bore out the old ring gear and remove from the flywheel with a drift.Fig. 6-8
6-82. Clean the ring gear seating area of the flywheel.3. Heat the new ring gear to about 220° C and fit to the mating surface of the flywheel.Fig. 6-9
6-9Replacing The Crankshaft Sealing Ring
The flywheel has been removed. 1. Remove shaft sealing ring with special tool No. 142700.Fig. 6-10
6-102. Screw the protective sleeve on to the crankshaft pin and fit the new shaft sealing ring with the packing washer facing the bearing plate.Fig. 6-11
6-11 Note for Refitment:Oil the packing washer before fitting.3. Use the pressure sleeve to tighten the shaft sealing ring so that it is flush with the bearing plate.Fig. 6-12
