Start By:a. remove counterweight sections
When performance of service work requires the counterweight in the Extended position, remove service link (2) from the Storage position and put the service link in position between the pipelayer frame and the counterweight frame. Install pins (1) and (3).
1. Put the counterweight in the Extended position. 2. Fasten a nylon strap and a hoist to the rod end of counterweight cylinder (5).3. Remove two bolts (6), plate (4), and pin (7). 4. Position counterweight cylinder (5) on bracket (8) and install bolt (9) to secure the counterweight cylinder. Unfasten the nylon strap and the hoist from the counterweight cylinder. Retract the counterweight cylinder. 5. Fasten a hoist to counterweight frame (10) as shown. 6. Remove service link (2) from the Extended position and install the service link in the Storage position. 7. Remove four bolts (12) and two plates (11) that secure upper and lower pins (13). 8. Install tooling (A) on lower pin (13) and attach tooling (A) to a hoist. Remove pin assembly (13). Weight of the pin assembly is 22 kg (49 lb).9. Repeat Step 8 to remove the upper pin assembly from the counterweight frame.10. Remove counterweight frame (10). Weight of the counterweight frame is 4809 kg (10600 lb). 11. Remove eight bolts (16), and remove plate (14) and two thrust washers (15) from counterweight frame (10). 12. If necessary, replace thrust washers (15). 13. If necessary, use tooling (B) and remove four bearings (17) from the upper and lower pin bores in counterweight frame (10). The following steps are for the installation of the counterweight frame. 14. Lower the temperature of each bearing (17) and use tooling (B) to install each bearing into the counterweight frame. Install each bearing to a depth of 3.5 mm (.137 in) below the surface of counterweight frame (10).15. Apply 5P0960 Molybdenum Grease to the mating surfaces of thrust washers (15).16. Install thrust washers (15) and plate (14) in counterweight frame (10). Install eight bolts (16) to secure the plate.17. Clean the pins and the pin bores. Put 5P0960 Molybdenum Grease in the pin bores.18. Fasten a hoist to counterweight frame (10) and put the counterweight frame in position on the machine. Install upper and lower pin assemblies (13). Put plate (11) in position on each of the two pin assemblies and install two bolts (12) through each plate to secure pin assemblies (13).

19. Put the counterweight in the Extended position.20. Fasten a nylon strap and a hoist to the rod end of the counterweight cylinder. Remove bolt (9) securing the counterweight cylinder to bracket (8).21. Extend the counterweight cylinder (5) until the pin bore in the rod end of the counterweight cylinder is in alignment with the pin bore in the counterweight frame.
