Inject starting aid (ether), only while cranking the engine, or after initial start-up, until the engine is running smoothly.Use sparingly. Excessive ether without cranking can cause piston and ring damage.Wait approximately two seconds before injecting again.Use ether for cold starting purposes only.After 30 seconds of engine cranking, allow two minutes for starting motor to cool before cranking again.Turbocharger damage can result, if the engine speed is not kept low until the engine oil gauge verifies the oil pressure is sufficient.

Move the transmission directional control lever to the NEUTRAL position.

Engage the parking brake.

Turn the battery disconnect switch to the ON position. The battery disconnect switch is inside of the access door of the battery box on the left side of the machine.
Return the governor control lever to the LOW IDLE position.

Turn the key start switch to the ON position. The system performs an automatic self-test. When you turn on the start switch key, the test is performed. If the test is complete without any faults, proceed to the next step. If the system detects a fault, check the electrical system. Make all of the necessary repairs before you start the engine.

The engine oil pressure light should turn on, and the alternator light should turn on.

Turn the start switch key to the START position. Crank the engine.

Push in the button for the ether starting aid. Release the button for the ether starting aid.
While you are cranking the engine, push the button for the ether starting aid in intervals of two seconds. Until the engine is running smoothly, continue to operate the ether starting aid.
Release the start switch key when the engine starts.For starting below -18°C (0°F), the use of the cold weather starting aids is recommended. A fuel heater, a jacket water heater, and extra battery capacity may be required.At temperatures below -23°C (-10°F), consult your Caterpillar dealer.
