Operation
Note: Allow the engine to cool for at least 20 minutes before performing the valve lash adjustment.
Refer to the specific Test and Adjust procedure. The number 1 piston should be in the top center position of the stroke. Perform adjustments according to the designated valves, according to the chart listed in the procedure.Note: Valve lash is measured between the valve bridge spanning the valve stems of the intake, and exhaust valves and the rocker arm button that contacts the valve bridge. Measurements and adjustments must be made with the valves fully closed.

Firmly tap the rocker arm at the top of the adjustment screw with a soft face mallet (such as 1S-0258). This will ensure the lifter roller seats against the base circle of the cam lobe.
Illustration 8 g03865733
Adjust the valve lash on the appropriate valves by loosening the adjustment locknut, and insert the nominal setting end of the intake or exhaust feeler gage between the bridge and rocker arm button.
Illustration 9 g03865745
Turn the adjusting screw to obtain the proper setting. A light amount of drag on the feeler gage should be felt. If the gage cannot be moved with a light amount of pull or pushing force, readjust the screw.
Illustration 10 g03865748
Hand tighten the adjustment locknut using the 458-3600 Torque Wrench Assembly. Hold the adjustment screw stationary while applying torque to the locknut with a 6mm hex key wrench. The wrench provides a preset torque of 120 +/-15 Nm (90+/-11 lb/ft).
Illustration 11 g03865755
Check the gap with the Go/No-go end of the Feeler Gage Group. The Go section of the gage body should insert between the bridge and rocker arm button. The No-Go portion should not fit. If the Go section will not insert between the bridge and rocker button, then repeat steps 4, 5 and 6. If the No-Go section will insert between the bridge and rocker button then repeat steps 4, 5 and 6.Inspection and Maintenance
Inspection
Inspect each gage body prior to each use for nicks, burrs, bends, or deep scratches. If damage is found, discontinue use until inspected and released for use by an approved inspector at the dealership.
Frequently inspect the gages (at least annually) by an approved dealership gage inspector. Maintain a written record of all inspections.
Make sure screws (2a and 3a) are tight and hold the body in place firmly. Use a thread retaining compound if necessary, to ensure retention.Service Parts
