Information:
start by: a) remove oil pan plate1. Remove nuts (1) and washers that hold the main bearing caps to the cylinder block.2. Remove main bearing cap. Tool (B) and a bar 9 inches long must be used to remove cap for rear main bearing.3. Remove the lower half of the main bearing from the bearing cap.
Main bearing caps and bearings must be kept with their respective locations in the cylinder block.
4. Install tool (A) in the oil hole in the crankshaft.5. Turn the crankshaft to cause tool (A) to push the upper half of the main bearing out of the block.
Bearing must be pushed from the block with the tab end coming out first.
Loosen the main bearing caps next to the bearing that is being removed to give clearance.Install Crankshaft Main Bearings
1. Put clean SAE 30 engine oil on the bearing surface of the upper half of the main bearing. Make back of main bearing clean and dry.2. Install upper half of main bearing with tool (A). Be sure the bearing tab is correctly installed in the notch in the block.
The bearing must be pushed into the block with the tab end going in last.
Loosen the main bearing caps next to the bearing that is being installed to give clearance.3. Make sure the bearing bore in the cap and the back of the bearing are clean and dry.4. Put the lower half of the main bearing in position in the bearing cap. Be sure the bearing tab is correctly installed in the notch in the main bearing cap.5. Put 5B1161 Wire across bearing. The weight of the crankshaft must be held up against the upper main bearings to get a correct measurement of the bearing clearance with the wire.6. Put clean SAE 30 engine oil on the bearing and on the crankshaft. Put the main bearing cap in position in the cylinder block.7. Put clean SAE 30 engine oil or moly lube on the threads or the studs and washer faces and install the nuts that hold the bearing cap to the cylinder block.8. Tighten nuts (1) to a torque of 70 5 lb.ft. (9.7 0.7 mkg).9. Put a mark on each nut and bearing cap.10. Tighten both nuts 90° 5° from marks.11. Remove main bearing cap.12. Remove wire from cap and measure thickness of wire. Thickness should be .0035 to .0066 in. (0.088 to 0.167 mm) and must not be more than .009 in. (0.23 mm).13. Install main bearing cap as in Steps 6 through 10.14. Make a check on the end play of the crankshaft with tool group (B). End play should be .006 to .018 in. (0.15 to 0.5 mm) and must not be more than .035 in. (0.88 mm). Lower half of rear main bearing controls end play.end by: a) install oil pan plate
