The following steps are required in order to set the bearing end play for the lower transfer gear. The desired end play is 0.11 0.04 mm (.004 .001 inch). There should be no need to measure the end play if the following procedure is followed.
Install bearing cage (11) in the transfer case. Do not install shim pack (12) at this time. Install two bolts (10) in order to hold the bearing cage in position. The bolts should be evenly spaced. Tighten the two bolts to a torque of 1.7 N m (15 lb in).
Rotate the lower transfer gear (13) three times. Tighten the two bolts (10) to a torque of 3.4 N m (30 lb in). The lower transfer gear (13) should be rotated an additional three times. Tighten the two bolts (10) to a torque of 3.4 N m (30 lb in).
Use Tooling (A) in order to measure the gap between bearing cage (11) and the transfer case at the two bolt locations. Average the two readings. Add 0.28 mm (.011 inch) to
