Removal Procedure
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
If the engine is equipped with a cover for the fuel injectors, remove the cover for the fuel injectors. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fuel Injector Cover - Remove and Install".
If the engine is equipped with a heat shield, remove the heat shield.

Remove breather tube (2) from valve mechanism cover (1). Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankcase Breather - Remove and Install".
Loosen captive bolts (3). Remove valve mechanism cover (1).
Remove captive bolts (3) and remove joint (4) (not shown) from valve mechanism cover (1). Installation Procedure

Thoroughly clean valve mechanism cover (1). Ensure that the groove for the joint in the valve mechanism cover is clean and dry. Ensure that the mating surface on the cylinder head is clean and dry.
Check the condition of captive bolts (3). If necessary, replace the captive bolts.
Install a new joint (4) to valve mechanism cover (1). Ensure that the joint is seated correctly in the groove in the valve mechanism cover.
Install captive bolts (3) to valve mechanism cover (1).
Position valve mechanism cover (1) onto the cylinder head.

Sequence for tightening the captive bolts
Tighten the captive bolts for the valve mechanism cover in the sequence that is shown in Illustration 3. Tighten the captive bolts to a torque of 9 N m (80 lb in).
Install breather tube (3) to valve mechanism cover (1). Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankcase Breather - Remove and Install".
If the engine is equipped with a heat shield, install the heat shield.
If the engine is equipped with a cover for the fuel injectors, install the cover for the fuel injectors. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fuel Injector Cover - Remove and Install".
