Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
The lower bucket pivot pins are designed to include an air void. The air void allows the oil to expand during machine operation.Add oil to a leaking pin joint until the pin can be repaired. Do not overfill the pin joint in order to compensate for the leakage. The pin joint should always be filled to the proper level in order to prevent pressure buildup.Note: Use SAE 80W90 oil in the lower pin joints. Never put grease in the lower pin joints. Grease cannot flow into the small openings around the pin. The lack of lubrication will cause the pin to fail.ReferenceRefer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Refill Capacities" for the correct amount of oil.

Remove the filler plug from the pin joint.
Use a 9U-7960 Void Meter to measure the pressure in the pin joint.The minimum acceptable pressure for the lower bucket pivot pin is 30 kPa (4.35 psi).
If the pressure is below 30 kPa (4.35 psi), add oil to the correct level.Note: If a void meter is not available, slowly fill the pin with oil and allow the air void to escape from the pin joint. When the pin joint is full, remove 25 cc (1 fl oz) of oil. This method of checking the oil level may not be as accurate as using the void meter.
Clean the filler plug and install the filler plug.
Repeat the procedure for the other lower bucket pivot pin.
