A machine may shift if improper procedures or equipment are used for lifting and tying down for transport. Ensure that proper equipment and procedures are used for lifting and tying machines down for transport. If a machine shifts it could cause personal injury or death.
Lifting the Machine

The weight of the 740 is 35500 kg (78300 lb). Park the machine on a level surface. Engage the parking brake. Lower the dump body and shut off the engine.Install the steering frame locks. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Steering Frame Lock".Lifting Points

Two lifting holes (1) are positioned at the rear of the machine in the dump body. Two lifting points (2) are positioned at the front of the machine. The two lifting points at the front of the machine are located under covers. The covers must be removed in order to access the front lifting points.Note: Do not use lifting holes (3) to lift the machine. These holes are provided in order to enable the dump body to be lifted off the machine.Perform the following steps in order to remove the covers and lift the machine:

Remove two bolts (4) and retain the bolts and washers. Remove cover (5) in order to access the left side front lifting point.
Repeat step 1 in order to gain access to the right side front lifting point.
Select proper rated cables, proper rated chain shackles, proper rated slings and proper rated lifting beams for lifting the machine. The lifting beam must be wide enough to prevent contact of the cables and slings with the machine.
Position the crane in order to lift the machine in a level plane.

Lift the machine from the positions (1) and (2). These positions are shown in illustrations 2 and 4.
Remove the slings, cables and beams when the machine has been lowered.
Remove the oscillation lock if the oscillation lock was installed.Tying Down the Machine
Each machine is equipped with brackets for tying down the machine.

Two points for tying down are positioned at the front of the machine. One point is located on the left side of the machine. One point is located on the right side of the machine.

Two points for tying down are positioned at the center of the machine.

One point for tying down is positioned at the rear of the machine.Attach tie-downs at these locations. Place blocks around the front wheels and around the rear wheels.Obey all of the laws that govern the actual load's weight, the actual load's width, and the actual load's length.Consult your Caterpillar dealer for shipping instructions for your machine. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Shipping the Machine".
