Use Tooling (E) in order to install adjustment ring (5) .
Use Tooling (D) in order to install adjustment ring (4) .
Tighten bolts (8) from Step 25 and bolts (6) from Step 26 to a torque of 25 N m (221 lb in). Tightening the bolts will allow adjustment rings (5) and (4) to move freely.
Use Tooling (E) in order to move adjustment ring (5) and Tooling (D) in order to move adjustment ring (4) to a position that maintains gear backlash and slight bearing end play.
Reposition the limited slip differential on Tooling (A) (not shown) with yoke (37) facing up.
Install Tooling (J). Use a suitable torque wrench and Tooling (J) in order to slowly turn yoke (37). Check the overall rolling torque with no bearing load on the differential bearings. Record the measured torque.
Oscillate the bevel gear and use Tooling (D) in order to advance adjustment ring (4). Continue to advance adjustment ring (4) until there is no backlash. Back off adjustment ring (4) by two lugs to the nearest locking position.
Use Tooling (E) in order to advance adjustment ring (5). Check the rolling torque on the pinion shaft. Continue to advance adjustment ring (5) until the rolling torque is 0.5 to 1.7 N m (4.43 15.05 lb in) greater than the torque value that was measured in Step 32.

Mount Tooling (G) on the carrier assembly. Measure the backlash at four places on bevel gear (16) at 90 degree intervals. Compare the lowest reading to the specifications. The proper backlash setting is 0.36 0.12 mm (0.014 0.005 inch).
If the backlash is not within the specification, retract one adjustment ring and advance the opposite adjustment ring equally in order to maintain the bearing preload. Recheck the bearing preload.

Correct contact pattern
After the backlash adjustment and the preload adjustment have been made, the tooth contact between the pinion shaft and the bevel gear must be checked. Use the following procedure:
Apply a small amount of Prussian blue, red lead, or paint on three or four adjacent teeth of the bevel gear.
Rotate the pinion shaft for several revolutions in one direction. Next, rotate the pinion shaft for several revolutions in the opposite direction. Then turn the pinion shaft in the original direction in order to observe the marked teeth.
