Differential Pinion Depth
The pinion depth procedure is only necessary if the pinion and bevel gear set or carrier is to be replaced. For the complete procedure, refer to the Differential Assembly procedure, Backhoe Loader Power Train Disassembly & Assembly.Pinion Bearing Preload
1. With the desired pinion depth shim (5) and bearing races installed in the differential carrier, install the bearing on the pinion and position the pinion in the carrier.2. Put the pinion ring, bearing and drive flange seal into the carrier.3. Install the drive yoke, washer and nut. Torque nut (3) to 320 N m (236 lb ft) or until a rolling torque of 2 to 3 N m (18 to 26 lb in) is obtained.4. Lock nut in place.Differential Backlash and Bearing Preload
The following procedure controls backlash and bearing preload. This procedure gives the same results for new and used bearings.1. Install bearings on differential halves.2. Assemble the differential in the carrier. Torque the differential assembly bolts to a torque of ... 150 N m (110 lb ft)3. Install bearing races and nuts.4. With the differential assembly in position, tighten the nut nearest the bevel gear until a backlash of 0.20 to 0.28 mm (.008 to .011 in) is obtained. Rotate the differential several times during this procedure.5. Tighten the other differential nut until there is zero bearing end play, then tighten this same nut two additional lugs.6.
