Right Side of the Machine
(1) Flow tube
(2) Flow transmitter Flow tube (1) is located in the supply line, downstream from the emulsion pump. Flow transmitter (2) is located at the front of the fan compartment on the right side of the machine. The above slide shows a side panel removed for illustration purposes.The emulsion spray system uses two devices that work in conjunction to provide the flow rate input signal to the machine ECM. These devices are flow tube (1) and the flow transmitter (2). Flow tube (1) is an electromagnetic device which measures conductive fluids. In order to provide an accurate flow rate measurement, the emulsion used in the system must contain at least 15 percent water. Flow tube (1) generates a voltage signal which is directly proportional to the velocity of the conductive fluid. This voltage signal is sent to the flow transmitter.Flow transmitter (2) receives a voltage signal from the flow tube (1) which is directly proportional to the velocity of the conductive fluid. The flow transmitter transforms this analog signal into a digital output signal at terminal "SIG" of the transmitter. The output signal takes the form of a series ground pulses. The frequency of the ground pulses is proportional to the input voltage from the flow tube. When the system is not operating, the circuit at terminal "SIG" of the flow transmitter is open. The flow transmitter circuit contains an 1800 Ohm pull-up resistor. The pull-up resistor ensures that machine ECM reads a voltage input when the circuit at terminal "SIG" of the flow transmitter is open. When the circuit at terminal "SIG" of the flow transmitter is closed, the pull-up resistor limits the amount of current that flows to ground. This function ensures that the ECM does not interpret the ground signal as a short-to-ground. When the emulsion system is not operating, the machine ECM reads a constant voltage.

Behind Cab, Left Side of the Machine
(3) Emulsion spray valve Emulsion spray valve (3) is part of the main valve block located behind the cab on the left side of the machine. A cover plate must be removed (shown) to access this component.Emulsion spray valve (3) is an electrically operated solenoid valve. This valve controls the oil flow to the hydraulic cylinder that controls the emulsion delivery . Emulsion spray valve (3) controls the oil flow to the hydraulic cylinder on the emulsion spray bar. The machine electronic control system analyzes input signals from emulsion system components. If the electronic control system determines that the emulsion spray system should be delivering emulsion, the solenoid in the emulsion spray valve is energized.
