Installation
To condition the asbestos free linings it is necessary to heat the linings to the specified temperature and allow them to cool. The linings are then again heated to the specified temperature.
Read and understand the following procedure to CONDITION the brake lining before starting the installation of new brake parts.
1. Install the new parts and adjust them correctly. Refer to the Service Manual for your machine for the correct installation and adjustment procedures. It is important that the initial adjustment is correct before proceeding. On 6 × 4 articulated dump trucks, the brakes on the third axle must be deactivated.
Operating a vehicle (at high speed) in an area that is congested with personnel and/or equipment may result in serious injury or death. Perform the following procedure on level ground. Clear the area of all personnel and equipment.
2. Choose a clear area to condition the brakes.3. Drive the truck in first gear with the service brakes engaged so that the engine speed is lugged down by 50 rpm below maximum.4. Periodically measure brake drum temperature at the location indicated on the illustration. Use a suitable surface temperature measurement instrument with an end probe of 3.00 mm (.125") minimum diameter.
Correct location (inside edge of drum, just outward of the dust cover) to measure drum surface temperature. The first check should be made after approximately five to seven minutes. Check all drums because the temperatures can vary. Due to varying surface contact, the drum temperatures will not rise at the same rate. The highest temperature drum should set the limit.
Continue conditioning until a temperature between 240 and 260°C (464 and 500°F) is achieved. DO NOT EXCEED 270°C (518°F).
During the conditioning process the brakes will smoke heavily. This is normal, as resins and shipping preservatives on the linings react against hot brake components.5. After achieving 240 to 260°C (464 to 500°F) drum temperature, allow the drums to cool to 100°C (212°F).6. Repeat Steps 3, 4, and 5 one time.7. Reactivate the third axle brakes on 6 × 4 trucks.
