Information:
Use this procedure in order to troubleshoot an abnormal oil pressure differential or use this procedure if one of the following event codes is active. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Event Codes" for information about event codes. You must access the engine monitoring system on Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) in order to view the current trip points for these codes. For information on the engine monitoring system, refer to Troubleshooting, "Engine Monitoring System".
Table 1
Event Code
Description Conditions which Activate the Code System Response
E073(1) High Oil Filter Differential Pressure The difference in oil pressure between the inlet and the outlet of the oil filters has exceeded the trip point for the programmed delay time. The code is logged.
The alarm output is activated.
E073(3) High Oil Filter Differential Pressure The code is logged.
The alarm output is activated.
The shutdown output is activated.
The engine is shut down.
E666(1) Low Oil Filter Differential Pressure The difference in oil pressure between the inlet and the outlet of the oil filters has fallen below the trip point for the programmed delay time. The code is logged.
The alarm output is activated.
E666(3) Low Oil Filter Differential Pressure The code is logged.
The alarm output is activated.
The shutdown output is activated.
The engine is shut down. Probable Causes
Plugged oil filter or faulty oil filter
Oil pressure sensors and/or circuits
Faulty oil filter bypass valveRecommended Actions
Plugged Oil Filter or Faulty Oil Filter
Check the oil filter differential pressure. Do not allow the differential pressure to exceed 103 kPa (15 psi). If the oil filter differential pressure is too high, change the oil filter elements.Inspect the oil filters for good condition. Suspect a problem with an oil filter if there is visible external damage to the filter housing. Replace any suspect oil filter.Oil Pressure Sensors and/or Circuits
Use the Cat ET to compare the status of the "Engine Oil Pressure" parameter and the "Unfiltered Engine Oil Pressure" parameter while the engine is off. Ensure that the sensors are correctly wired. If the difference between the sensors is not approximately equal to zero, troubleshoot the sensor circuits. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Sensor Signal (Analog, Active) - Test".Faulty Oil Filter Bypass Valve
An oil filter bypass valve that is stuck in the closed position can cause a high reading for differential pressure when the oil is cold. An oil filter bypass valve that is stuck in the open position can cause a low reading for differential pressure when the oil is hot. Check the operation of the oil filter bypass valve. For more information, refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, "Measuring Engine Oil Pressure".If the proper operation of the oil filter bypass valve is suspect, repair the valve, when possible. Replace the valve, if necessary.
