Coolant temperature is greater than 106 °C (223 °F) for more than four seconds.
The engine has been running more than three minutes. This three minute delay begins once the engine speed is within 50 rpm of low idle. 3406E and 3456 EnginesThe Electronic Control Module (ECM) detects all of the following conditions:
Coolant temperature is greater than 108 °C (226 °F) for more than four seconds.
The engine has been running more than three minutes. This three minute delay begins once the engine speed is within 50 rpm of low idle.System Response:The ECM will log the diagnostic event. The ECM will derate the engine power by 12.5 percent for each degree celsius above the trip point. The maximum derate is 25 percent of full power. The ECM will restore full engine power when the coolant temperature falls 2 °C (3.6 °F) below the trip point for 20 seconds.

Connect the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET) to the service tool connector.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position. The engine should be OFF.

OK - Proceed to Test Step 2.
