Gas Spring orientated with the rod downward
The Gas Spring in the Left-Hand Console should be assembled with the piston rod positioned downward, so that the internal seals in the Gas Spring remain lubricated. Refer to Illustration 1.

Gas Spring orientated incorrectly with the rod upward
If the Gas Spring is installed with the piston rod upward as shown in Illustration 2, perform the following rework instructions.Rework Procedure

Remove 282-2035 Cushion.

Remove 282-6690 Cover from 284-8577 Steering Control Support Gp. Refer to Illustration 4.

(A) 286-0602 Bushing
Remove bushing (A).

(B) 218-0728 Springs
Unlatch and tilt the Left-Hand Console to the up position. Secure the Left-Hand Console to prevent the console from falling when the Gas Spring is removed.
Removed the two springs (B) that hold each end of the Gas Spring to the ball studs on the Left-Hand Console. Refer to Illustration 6.

(B) 218-0728 Springs
Remove the gas spring. Reorient the gas spring with the piston rod positioned downward as shown in Illustration 7. Reinstall the gas spring. Reinstall the two springs (B). Assure the retainers are fully seated.

(A) 286-0602 Bushing
Remove temporary restraint from Left-Hand Console. Lower the Left-Hand Console to the down position. Reinstall bushing (A).
Raise and lower the Left-Hand Console to make sure the console functions properly.
Reinstall the Cover and Cushion on the Steering Control Support Gp using the existing hardware.
