The high voltage that is produced by an operating generator set can cause severe injury or death. Before performing any maintenance or repairs, ensure that the generator will not start.Place the engine control switch in the "OFF" position. Attach "DO NOT OPERATE" tags to all starting controls. Disconnect the batteries or disable the starting system. Lock out all switchgear and automatic transfer switches that are associated with the generator.
Hot oil and hot components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or hot components to contact the skin.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Note: Shorten the oil change interval to 250 service hours or 6 months if the generator set is operating at a load factor that is greater than 40 percent.
A generator set that operates at 1500 rpm or 50 Hz will use 2.53 Liters per hour (0.67 US gallons per hour) of fuel with a load factor of 40%.
A generator set that operates at 1800 rpm or 60 Hz will use 3.04 Liters per hour (0.80 US gallons per hour) of fuel with a load factor of 40%.Note: If you are using a fuel with a sulfur content that is greater than 0.5% you must shorten the engine oil change interval, unless you use an engine oil that is highly alkaline. Refer to Table 1.

Greater than 1.0%     250 service hours or 6 months    Do not drain the oil when the engine is cold. As the oil cools, suspended waste particles settle on the bottom of the oil pan. The waste particles are not removed with the draining cold oil. Drain the crankcase with the engine stopped. Drain the crankcase with the oil warm. This draining method allows the waste particles that are suspended in the oil to be drained properly.Failure to follow this recommended procedure will cause the waste particles to be recirculated through the engine lubrication system with the new oil.Drain the Engine Oil

Disconnect fitting (1) from bracket (2) .
Connect fitting (1) to a sump drain pump and pump the oil out of the engine.
Fasten fitting (1) to bracket (2) after the oil has been pumped out of the engine.Replace the Oil Filter
