Installation Procedure (Direct Drive)
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Note: Check the condition of all seals and of all components. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.

Lower the temperature of the bearing cups. Install the cups in the cages until the cups make contact with the bottom of the counterbores in the cages.
Heat two bearings (1) to a maximum temperature of 135°C (275°F). Install the bearings on the shaft, as shown.

Attach a appropriate lifting device and a hoist to shaft (2). Lower the shaft in the steering clutch case.

Install the original amount of shims and the cage in the right side of the bevel gear case.
Put the bevel gear in position in the bevel gear case.
Push the shaft through the bevel gear and into the cage on the right side.
Install the bolts, the locks and the nuts that hold the bevel gear to the shaft. Do not tighten the nuts.
Install cage (3) and the original amount of shims in the left side of the bevel gear case.Note: If the original thickness of shims is not known, refer to the Service Manual for additional information.
Install bolts (4) that hold the cage in position.

Put a wood block under the bevel gear.Note: The wood block is used as a support for the gear and a stop when nuts (5) are tightened.
Make sure that the bevel gear does not turn. Tighten nuts (5) .
Bend the locks over the nuts.End By: Install the steering clutch hubs. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Clutch Hub - Remove and Install".
