If the diesel engine is in good mechanical condition, and the precautions necessary for cold weather operation are taken, ordinary cold weather will not cause difficulty in starting or loss of efficiency. Lubricants: When it becomes necessary to start the engine in temperatures below -10°F (-23°C), lubricants of lower viscosity should be used. See the topic, LUBRICATION SPECIFICATIONS. Coolant: When temperature is below freezing, sufficient anti-freeze solution should be used in the cooling system to prevent freezing. See the topic, COOLANT SPECIFICATIONS.Block heaters are often used to assist starting and engine warm-up in cold weather. Correct installation is very important to insure complete circulation of the coolant through the cylinder block and heads when the heater is operating. See your authorized dealer for proper installation procedure. Electrical Equipment: During cold weather, more attention should be given the condition of the battery. It should be tested frequently to insure sufficient power for starting. All switches and connections in the electrical system should be inspected and kept in good condition to prevent losses through improper contacts. See the topic, BATTERY. Fuel: Fuel must be "free flowing" enough to flow readily through the fuel lines at the lowest temperature at which the engine will be started and operated.
