FLUID SPILLAGE CONTAINMENTCare must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "TOOLS AND SHOP PRODUCT GUIDE, NENG2500", for Tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates. This is shown with the transmission and transfer gear shown removed from the machine. The unit may also be serviced in chassis by first removing the secondary steering pump. 1. Remove four bolts (2) with washers from drive unit assembly (1). 2. Attach Tool (A) with lifting strap to a suitable lifting device.3. Using Tooling (A) and a hoist remove assembly (1) from the transfer gear and two dowel pins (3).4. The weight of the drive assembly is 41 kg (90 lb). Install the secondary steering pump drive in the reverse order. Refer to the Operation & Maintenance Manual for all fluid capacities and the proper filling procedures.Disassemble & Assemble Secondary Steering Pump Drive Assembly
1. Remove two bolts (1), washers and cover (2) from drive housing (3). 3. Rotate housing (3) to the opposite side.4. Unlock lock ring (7) and using Tool (B) remove nut (6). 5. Using Tool (A), press shaft (5) from the bearings, gear and housing. 6. Remove internal retainer ring (8). The following steps are for the assembly of the secondary steering pump drive assembly. 7. Install internal retainer ring (8) 8. Place gear (14), bearing cup (13) and bearing (12) in housing (3).9. Lower temperature of shaft (5) and with snap ring (4) in place on shaft use Tool (A) to install shaft (5) in housing (3) through bearing (12) and gear (14).10. Position O-ring (9) in housing (3) and install cover (2). 11. Rotate housing assembly (3) back to opposite side.12. Place spacers (15) and (16) on shaft (5) and in housing (3).13. Install bearing cup (17), bearing (18) and lock ring (19).14. Install nut (20) on shaft (5) using Tool (B) and tighten to a torque of 220 25 N m (160 20lb ft). 15. Bend the ear of lock ring (19) in matching notch (21) of nut (20).
