Removal Procedure
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the disassembly procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure.Steam can cause personal injury.Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the fill cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.Remove the fill cap slowly to relieve pressure.Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with the skin and eyes to prevent personal injury.
Drain the coolant from the cooling system into a suitable container for storage or disposal. The capacity of the cooling system is 77 L (20.3 US gal).

Loosen hose clamps (1) and (4). Remove the hoses from the regulator housing assembly (2). Remove bolts (3). Remove regulator housing (2) from the engine.

Remove water temperature regulator (5) from regulator housing assembly (2). Remove gasket (5) from regulator housing assembly (2) and from the engine.

Remove seal (7) from housing (2) .Installation Procedure
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before assembly, all parts should be thoroughly cleaned in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry parts. Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause later trouble. Inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.

Install seal (7) on regulator housing assembly (2) .

Install a new gasket (5) on regulator housing assembly (2). Install water temperature regulator (5) in regulator housing assembly (2) .

Install bolts (3). Install the hoses on regulator housing assembly (2). Tighten hose clamps (1) and (4) .
Fill the cooling system. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7299, "Cooling System Level - Check" for the correct procedure.
