(8) Torque for bolts that hold the bevel gear ... 142 14 N m (105 10 lb ft)(9) Distance from shoulder on shaft to face of flange after flanges have been pressed on with 133 to 178 kN (15 to 20 ton) force is ... 3.0 0.8 mm (.12 .03 in)(10) Torque for nuts with 5P3413 Thread Sealant on threads of nuts and shaft ... 475 35 N m (350 26 lb ft)Preload of Bearings for Bevel Gear Shaft
1. Install bevel gear and shaft in the steering clutch case.2. Install shims (2) that were removed at disassembly.3. Install enough shims (3) so there is a small amount of end play in bevel gear shaft (5). Tighten all of the bolts (1) and (4) before checking the end play of bevel gear shaft (5).4. Measure the end play of bevel gear shaft and remove bolts (4) and enough shims (3) so there is no end play of bevel gear shaft (5).5. Remove an additional 0.18 mm (.007 in) of shims (3) to get the correct amount of preload for bearings (6) and (7). Install all of bolts (4).6. Tighten bolts (1) and (4) in bearing cages to 45 7 N m (33 5 lb ft). A torque of 3.9 to 5.6 N m (2.89 to 4.14 lb ft) is needed to turn shaft (5) after the correct preload is set.Adjustment of End Play for Pinion Shaft
To get the correct amount of end play for pinion shaft (11), add or remove shims (12).End play for shaft ... 0.00 to 0.05 mm (.000 to .002 in)Free Movement (Backslash)
Tools Needed: 8S2338 Indicator Group.1. Adjust the preload of the bearings for the bevel gear shaft. See PRELOAD OF BEARINGS FOR BEVEL GEAR SHAFT.2. Adjust the pinion shaft end play. See ADJUSTMENT OF END PLAY FOR PINION SHAFT.3. Install shims (15) and pinion shaft and housing (14).4. Visually, put the pinion in a position so the heel of the teeth for the pinion shaft is in line with the heel of the teeth for the bevel gear, location (A).5. Make adjustment of pinion shaft toward or away from bevel gear (13) by adding or removing shims (15).6. Assemble tools needed from 8S2338 Indicator Group, for checking bevel gear and pinion shaft free movement (backlash).7. Attach the tools for checking free movement (backlash) to the top of bevel gear case.8. Hold the pinion shaft so it can not turn.9. Put the finger of the dial indicator on one of the teeth on bevel gear (13).10. Move the bevel gear clockwise and then counterclockwise.11. Read the difference in the measurements on the dial indicator. This is the amount of free movement (backlash).12. Check the amount of free movement at four different locations on the bevel gear, taking the lowest measurement as the location to check the amount of free movement.13. If the measurement is too much at the location of the smallest amount of free movement, remove
