3073 PS40118 This Program can be administered either before or after failure. In either case the decision whether to apply the Program is made by the dealer. When reporting the repair, use "PS40118" as the Part number and "7755" as the Group Number. If adminstered before failure, use "56" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and use "T" as the SIMS Description Code. If adminstered after failure, use "96" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and use "Z" as the SIMS Description Code.
This Revised Service Letter replaces the April 25, 2000 Service Letter. Changes have been made to the Action Required.

PROBLEM
The transmission modulating valve on the Forward clutch (no. 2) on many of the D5M and D6M Track Type Tractors can become unstable, causing harsh or chattering shifts. The instability is a result of a small piston volume, a small oil passage to the piston, and the valve design. A new valve, designed to be more stable, replaces the original valve and eliminates the instability.

1. Remove 118-1336 Modulating Valve from Forward clutch (number 2).
2. Install new 160-8408 Modulating Valve, torque to 30 N.m (22 ft-lb).
3. Install 179-4963 Jumper Wire and 124-9402 Clip to connect the machine harness to the 160-8408 Modulating Valve.
4. Using Caterpillar ET, or a 4C8195 Control Service Tool, record the steering clutch and brake calibration values.
5. Flash 191-5019 Powertrain Software into electronic powertrain controller.
6. Warm the machine above 50C before proceeding to Step 6.
7. Calibrate engagement pressure on all transmission clutches (submodes 31 - 35).
8. Calibrate transmission fill paramaters (submode 40).
9. Check steering clutch and brake values, if changed, calibrate.
