The transmission modulating valve on the Forwardclutch (no. 2) on many of the D5M and D6M Track Type Tractors can becomeunstable, causing harsh or chattering shifts. The instability is a resultof a small piston volume, a small oil passage to the piston, and the valvedesign. A new valve, designed to be more stable, replaces the originalvalve and eliminates the instability.AFFECTED PRODUCT

1. Remove 118-1336 Modulating Valve fromForward clutch (number 2).2. Install new 160-8408 Modulating Valve, torqueto 30 N.m (22 ft-lb).3. Install 179-4963 Jumper Wire and 124-9402Clip to connect the machine harness to the 160-8408 Modulating Valve.4. Using Caterpillar ET, or a 4C8195 ControlService Tool, record the steering clutch and brake calibration values.5. Flash 191-5019 Powertrain Software intoelectronic powertrain controller.6. Calibrate engagement pressure on all transmissionclutches (submodes 31 - 35).7. Calibrate transmission fill paramaters (submode40).8.
