Lubricant Information
Certain abbreviations follow Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) J754 nomenclature and some classifications follow SAE J183 abbreviations. The MIL specifications are U.S.A. Military Specifications. The definitions other than Caterpillar's will be of assistance in purchasing lubricants. Recommended oil viscosities can be found in the Lubricant Viscosities chart.Grease is classified by the National Lubricating Grease Institute (NLGI) based on ASTM D217-68 Worked Penetration characteristics which are given a defined consistency number.A new oil performance category has been released by Caterpillar and the American Petroleum Institute (API) for the engine oil. The new category is:* API CF-4 (engine oil)The API CF-4 as announced will become the new category for the API CE type oils. The performance tests for this oil will be the new Cat 1K single cylinder oil test engine and other engine tests which are presently part of the CE oil evaluation.Cat Oils have been developed, tested and approved by Caterpillar to provide the performance and life which has been designed and built into our engines.Cat Oils, currently being applied for engine lab development are offered by Caterpillar dealers for continued use. Cat Engine Oil (EO)
Caterpillar has an oil formulation to provide maximum performance and life in Caterpillar engines.* Cat Engine Oil (EO)Cat Engine Oil (EO) is performance rated as: SAE 10W30 - API CF-4 (new category); API CESAE 15W40 - API CF-4 (new category); API CE; API CD-IIThis oil formulation has strong dispersancy effectiveness along with sufficient alkalinity and low sulfated ash level for the performance requirements of the present day engine designs. By meeting the new API CF-4 performance category, requirements are met for newly designed engines of the future.Commercial Oils
Failure to follow these recommendations can cause shortened engine life due to carbon deposits or excessive wear.
If an oil other than EO is to be used, use the following guideline:* API specifications CE or CF-4* European specification CCMC D4 or D5* Military specifications MIL-L-2104EOil with these specifications may require shortened oil change periods as determined by close monitoring of oil condition with Scheduled Oil Sampling (S O S) and infrared analysis.Additional Notes
The percentage of sulfur in the fuel will affect the engine oil recommendations. For fuel sulfur effects, the Infrared Analysis and the ASTM D2896 procedure can be used to evaluate the residual neutralization properties of an engine oil. The sulfur products formation depends on the fuel sulfur content, oil formulation, crankcase blowby, engine operating conditions and ambient temperature.The Caterpillar 20 times rule for TBN (Reference: Oil and Your Engine SEBD0640) versus fuel sulfur is a general requirement, but it can be modified by used oil analysis. The effectiveness of an oil formulation will depend on the additive package. A balanced additive package oil of a lower TBN can be as effective in fuel sulfur neutralization and overall performance as some oils with higher TBN
