Before you install the piston and piston pin, measure the bore in the piston pin bearing. Before you install the connecting rod, measure the bore in the bearing for the crankshaft. The bores must be within specifications or the bearings will not fit properly. This will cause wear and damage to the connecting rod, the bearing for the piston pin, the bearing for the crankshaft, the piston pin, and the crankshaft.The engine's specifications provide instructions for installation of the bearings. After the bearings are installed, measure the bores in the bearings and ensure that the bores meet the diameters according to the engine's specifications. Refer to Specifications, "Connecting Rod".The length of a connecting rod can be altered by use. After the bearings are installed, measure the distance from the center of the piston pin bearing to the center of the crankshaft bearing. Make sure that the distance agrees with the engine's specifications. Refer to Specifications, "Connecting Rod".Prior to the final installation of the piston pin and connecting rod, use a plastigage to measure the clearances of the bearings. Ensure that the clearances meet the permissible measurements. Refer to Specifications, "Connecting Rod".Note: A worn crankshaft may be ground. Connecting rod bearings are available with smaller inside diameters than the original bearings. The smaller inside diameter accommodates crankshafts that have been ground.
