Removal Procedure
Start By:
Remove the crankcase breather. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankcase Breather - Remove and Install".
Remove the air inlet manifold. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Inlet Manifold - Remove".
Remove the fuel shutoff solenoid. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fuel Shutoff Solenoid - Remove and Install".
Remove the fuel injection pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fuel Injection Pump - Remove".
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Breather deflector
Remove the hose adapter (1) from the breather deflector (2) .
Remove the breather deflector (2) from the inside of the housing for the fuel injection pump.Installation Procedure
Install new O-ring (4) onto the threaded hose adapter (1).
Install the breather deflector (2) into the housing for the fuel injection pump. Ensure that the square face (3) of the breather deflector is parallel to the engine cylinder block.Note: Early engines have breather deflectors that are made of metal. Later engines have breather deflecters that are made of plastic. A plastic hose adapter can only be installed with a plastic breather deflecter. A metal hose adapter can only be installed with a metal breather deflecter.
Install the hose adapter (1) into the breather deflector (2) and tighten to the following torque.Breather deflector that is plastic ... 4 N m (3.0 lb ft)Breather deflector that is metal ... 16 N m (12.0 lb ft)End By:
Install the fuel injection pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fuel Injection Pump - Install".
Install the fuel shutoff solenoid. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fuel Shutoff Solenoid - Remove and Install".
Install the air inlet manifold. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Inlet Manifold - Install".
Install the crankcase breather. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankcase Breather - Remove and Install".
