Grade Control (Matching the Joint)
Matching the height of the mat to an existing mat or curb is also referred to as joint matching. This requires the screed to be very responsive to any changes in the elevation of the existing mat or curb.In this application, profile is being preferred over ridability or the screed is being over corrected. This will force the screed to change depth in a very short distance.Mount the grade sensor 3/4 back from the tow point or mount the grade sensor just ahead of the augers. If you mount the sensor close to the screed, the sensor will be very sensitive of any deviation in the screed. Deviations in the position of tow point does not accelerate the sensitivity for the grade sensors. The machine travel over irregular grades is a factor in the sensitivity of the sensors. Therefore, the screed is not anticipating these deviations. The screed can only react when there is a deviation in the position of the tow point.Grade Control (Ski)
When using automation off a ski, corrections to deviations that occur at the sensor or the screed will require the paver to travel approximately 5 lengths of the tow arm before the correction is fully completed. Corrections are made immediately if there is deviations that occur at the tow point. Deviations at the tow point occur when the machine paves over grades that are irregular. Deviations in the tow point will be corrected by the grade sensor before these deviations can affect the angle of attack on the screed. In this application ridability is being built, or averaging all required changes in depth over a longer area.Mount the grade sensor 1/4 back from the tow point. An immediate reaction will occur if the machine paves over irregular grades and the sensor is mounted in the forward position. The same position of the tow point is maintained in relation to the reference. This is regardless of the irregularities in the grade.

Mount the Sonic Tracker II® fourteen inches above the top of the stringline. A piece of tubing can be placed over the string in order to increase the reflective surface for best results.Existing Surface
The Sonic Tracker II® can almost follow any existing surface. Simply place the Sonic Tracker II® fourteen inches above the surface. Observe the "On Grade" bar. Switch the control box to the auto mode. Start paving.Curb or Gutter
Before you pave you can consider a curb or a gutter for a reference. Install the Sonic Tracker II® fourteen inches above the curb or above the edge of the gutter. Observe an "On Grade" bar. Switch the control box to the auto mode. Start paving.Note: Curbs and gutters make a very poor reference if smoothness of the placed mat is of concern. This is due to the variations in elevation along the length of the curb or gutter.
