Fluid Spillage Containment
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose of fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Hot oil and components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or components to contact the skin. Be sure that the engine and components are cool enough to touch with your bare hand prior to performing any service work.
Oil (approximately one gallon) will drain from engine oil cooler when the oil filters or the bypass valves are removed from the base. Position a suitable container under the engine oil cooler to contain the engine oil for storage or disposal.1. Using Tool (A), remove the oil filters from the oil filter base.2. Remove four bolts (2) and the O-ring seal from adapter (3).3. Remove two bolts (4), the washers, the retainer ring, and the gasket. Remove eight bolts (5) from oil filter base (1). Remove oil filter base (1) from the engine. 4. Remove the two bolts that hold the cover to the engine oil filter base. Remove the cover, the gasket, main spring (6), and bypass plunger (7) from the oil filter base. The following steps are for the installation of the oil filter base & bypass valve. Inspect all O-ring seals for wear or damage and replace as necessary. Clean all gasket material off all mating surfaces of the oil filter base prior to assembly & installation. Lubricate all seals and valves with clean engine oil prior to installation. 5. Put bypass plunger (7), main spring (6), the gasket, and the cover in position to the oil filter base. Install the two bolts and the washers that hold the cover to the engine oil filter base. Bypass plunger (7) must move freely in the bore. 6. Put oil filter base (1) in position to the engine. Install eight bolts (5) and the washers. Install two bolts (4), the washers, the retainer ring, and the gasket.7. Install four bolts (2) and the O-ring seal to adapter (3).8. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the seal of the new oil filters. Install two new oil filters by hand. When the seal contacts the oil filter base, tighten the oil filter one turn more.9. Refill the engine block with oil. The capacity of the engine block is 125 L (33 U.S. gal). Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, Topic "Lubricant and Viscosities" for correct filling procedures.
